A original engraving, published in 1842.  In need of restoration or a forgiving eye.

It is a lovely family scene with three generations enjoying the Spring sunshine in their country cottage garden. Grandad sits in his chair, an open book and his spectacles on the table beside him.  He looks fondly at the two little children with their mother seated beside him. Their father stands against the fence holding an open book.  To his side a lurcher looks longingly out of the gate and above a house martin heads for it's nest beneath the eaves.

Titled 'Sunday Morning'. Engraved by Frederick Bromley (active 1832-1870) after a painting of 1841 by Alexander Johnston (1815-1891), a well known Scottish painter.  Published November 1842 by Welch & Gwynne, Printsellers to the Royal Family, 24 St James Street.

Printed on wove paper.  Trimmed to the  plate.  A large stain extending into the scene from the bottom left corner and another, less noticeable, top right.  A small indentation to the top left corner and a few faint speckles in the sky in that area. Two small vertical tears in the title area just reaching, but not extending into, the image.
Priced accordingly.

A rare engraving but another impression can be seen in the collection of the British Museum.

Measures 45 x 54cm.
