The Great High Priest Greek Orthodox Icon

The depiction of Christ as a High Priest is a creation of the Palaiologian painting and consists in the change of the attire of Christ, who is no longer depicted dressed in a tunic and himation but with a patriarchical sack. He holds the Gospel open in his left hand while he blesses with his right. This image is often placed on the despotic throne.

The Icon's Origin

The present work is a replica of the original portable icon of the The Great High Priest, of the Holy Monastery of All Saints in Patras, the creation of which is chronologically placed in the middle of the 17th century.
