Here is a rare opportunity to acquire a Welsh Language version of the 1972 Department of the Environment brief guide to Conwy Castle.

There was no better time to visit our historic buildings in Britain than the 1960s and 1970s, when they were in the care of the Ministry of Works/Public Building and Works/Department of the Environment. In that wonderful, long-ago, pre-quango world, when our ancient monuments were the direct responsibility of a department of government, and invariably with an on-site custodian, one could visit them inexpensively (including very reasonably-priced annual passes), and find really informative printed guides, such as the blue-covered booklets, written by an Inspector of Ancient Monuments (an historian/archaeologist who really knew his/her subject) and brief guides, like this one, which, with illustrations, gave you the essential information about the site to enable the visitor to make the most of the visit.

As you can see this little guide, which is printed on a sheet of card and then folded, cost 2.5p, when it was published in 1972, and, as well as being a collector’s item, it can still be used if you visit the site

You will note that, although this is a Welsh Language version, 50 years ago, Conwy was still referred to as ‘Conway’.
