Offered here is a spectacular pair of Videon 35mm stereo cameras made by Stereocrafters Incorporated in Milwaukee Wisconsin in the early 1950s. Shortly after the end of the second World War, there was a very significant resurgence of interest in stereo photography. The history of stereo photography from the time is well documented online and many of the most innovative ideas and designs are attributed to a man named Seton Rochwite who was the inventor of the original Stereo Realist which was produced by the thousands by the David White company between 1947 and 1971. Stereocrafters was a small company who set out to produce a less expensive competitive product. The company was established in about 1950 and managed to survive until the very early 1960s. During that time, they managed to produce two camera models. The original Videon (which was also sold as the name Videon Challenger) and the Videon II. So if you own these two cameras, you own fine examples of their complete offerings. The original Videon introduced in 1950 has the following specifications:

Type: 35mm stereo camera

Size: 177 mm x 78 mm x 62 mm (W x H x D)

Shutter: mechanical central type shutter with 3 blades, between the lenses.

Shutter Speeds: 1/100, 1/50, 1/25, 1/10 sec., "B" and"T"

Viewfinder: Simple viewfinder mounted on body.

Film Loading: manual, whole back slides off to load film.

Film Transport: manual, with knob, release button to be pushed for each frame advance.

Frame Counter: rotating disc on top of body, numbered every five frames to 25.

Flash Contact: PC-Contact.

Tripod Socket: 1/4"-20 on bottom plate not centered.

The cameras have neither strap connectors nor accessory shoes

In general the specifications of the Videon II are the same as the original camera, however the Videon II is heavier at 650 grams and it has been cosmetically redesigned. The camera bodies are a combination of plastic and aluminum. The styling of the cameras is very striking. The original marketing plan from Stereocrafters was to deliver a strong competitor to the Stereo Realist at a lower price. The original Videon was priced at $97.48 when it was introduced to the market. Both cameras are in cosmetically beautiful and fully functional condition. They would make an absolutely smashing addition to any camera collection. Why not add them to your collection today.
