(The recipient, Lyman B. Sturgis was the Secretary of the Macmillan Company, and treasurer of the Sturgis and Walton Company, which later merged with other companies to become the Eaton, Ives, Sturgis, Walton Company. Sturgis was also a member of the American Booksellers' Association, having served as the Secretary and Treasurer of its Banquet Committee.)

From AskArt, A book illustrator, etcher, and painter, Edward Suydam also did pencil drawings. He was born in New Jersey and studied with Thornton Oakley at the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia in 1900. He spent most of his life in that city and New York City, but during the 1940s, spent much time in California where he illustrated books about the state including "Los Angeles, City of Dreams" and "San Francisco, A Pageant".
