Rare Antique
1937 Art Deco International Exibition Black Bakelite Slimline powder
compact.
A souvenir from the 1937 EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS ET TECHNIQUES DANS LA VIE MODERNE. Lovely hard to find item. Mirror intact (although silvering going),
puff, and sieve still present. Top has a red & blue enameled emblem which
has crown, ship, fleur de lis, and banner with Latin inscription. Banner reads “Fluctuat Nec Mergitur” which is
the Paris City Motto (meaning ‘Rocked by the waves but does not sink”). Unusual faceted shape.
Under the sieve, it is marked "Made in France". I have seen white Bakelite version of this marked with a "C", and similar compacts marked Coty. Since Coty originated in Paris, I am going to attribute this to that maker. Please correct me if you know something I don't on this -- Not my area of expertise!
Dimensions: Approx. 2.5” Diameter
x 3/8” Tall.
Unpacked weight: 1.3 Oz.
Condition: Good giftable condition. Mentionable issues as seen in photographs: 1) Mirror silvering degrading on perimeter, 2) Gilt on top rim eroding in 3 places (in clock positions 9:30, 8:45 and 7:00), 3) underside scuffing commiserate with age and use, 4) Faint SMALL crack in Bakelite outer border at approx 6:00 on the faceted outer edge (just under the 3 of 1937) and 5) Insert which has top decoration has two nicks on the perimeter (in clock positions 10:15 & 12:00). Puff & sieve are in excellent condition.
Always happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping. I only
charge actual postage, and always use recycled packing materials.
Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all
possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear
redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues
between side views.
I gladly accept returns, but please note I do not pay return postage
unless there was a significant error in my description. The item
listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my
knowledge. All dimensions and weights approximate. If you have a question
or an assumption on an item prior to purchase, please ask. I much prefer
to take the time on the front end to make sure you will be satisfied with your
purchase.
Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a
history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw
which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this
does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require
comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
