RARE AND POINGNANT MILITARIA -

[WAR HORSES].

Highly unusual and evocative original photograph album related entirely to the Horse Transport Section of World War One, revealing the close bond between the horses and their military handlers, probably France or Belgium circa 1917-18, with presentation inscription dated March 1919.

Vintage green cloth album containing a total of 92 gelatin silver photographs, all window-mounted two to a page and back to back on stiff card leaves. Uncaptioned. Location unspecified, although the photographs were probably taken in Belgium or France (a sign visible in one of the photos is in French and English). Photographs presumably date from circa 1917-18, and the presentation inscription on front pastedown is dated early 1919 - 'With keen appreciation of the help you gave me in re-organising the Transport Section of 2nd Battn. Q. W. R. / March 1919. / C. S. Jones'. Final two leaves left blank. Size: photographs - each approx. 6 x 10.5cm / album - 22 x 17 x 5cm.

Very Good condition photographs in a Good only condition album. Front hinge has split and the block of leaves has separated from the spine in two or three parts. Collated and complete, with nothing having been obviously removed. Photographs with generally good tones, with scattered age-toning and occasional fading to some images. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.

This evocative photograph album gives us a unique insight into the 'off duty' life of war horses and their soldier handlers at a military camp (in France or Belgium) in the latter part of World War One. The bond between humans and equines is clear to see. Many of the photographs show a soldier holding the reins of two horses while posing for camera with a railway track and army camp in the background. More research required!
