WITH PHOTOS AND TYPESCRIPT ACCOUNT OF AN ASCENT OF FUJI-SAN IN 1931 - AS WELL AS OTHER INTERESTING VIEWS OF TRAVELS IN THE FAR EAST, INCLUDING AN UNUSUAL 'PORT HOLE' IMAGE -

MOUNT FUJI (Fujiyama, known affectionately by locals as 'Fuji-san', an active stratovolcano, located on the island of HonshÅ« in Japan, that towers over the Tokyo region of Japan. With a summit elevation of 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft 3 in), it is the second-highest volcano located on an island in Asia.)

An album of original photographs, which includes a series of images with contemporary typescript documenting a climb to the summit of Mount Fuji by four British merchant seamen in 1931, as well as other views of Asia.  

Vintage string bound photograph album, leather covers and spine, hand-coloured embossed Japanese scene to upper cover. Manuscript 'title page' ('Here and there around the world / Camera 'Vogtlander.'), followed by approx. 87 photographs on 17 pages. Laid loosely inside is one large vintage photograph of the mountaineers in a glassine sleave, and an original typescript (4pp). Images are tipped recto and verso onto black card leaves with corner mounts, and captioned in white India ink. Many leaves left blank at rear. Size: (album) oblong 4to - approx. 38cm x 28cm / photographs - mostly 11cm x 6.3cm, with one large loose photograph of 30cm x 20.8cm.

Very Good (photos) to Good only (album) condition. Wear to binding, with splitting to leather around the edges exposing the internal cushioning. Light age-toning to a number of photographs. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.

An interesting photograph album which, in part, documents an ascent to the summit of Mount Fuji in Japan in June 1931 by a group of British merchant seaman. A contemporary typescript account of the climb is laid loosely inside together with an enlarged vintage portrait of the group with local guides. 

The album as a whole contains approx. 87 photographs.

The first 5 pages (27 photographs) document the ascent, with captions including the MS title 'A mountain climb in Japan' .

The typescript - which spans a bit over three folio sides in total - gives place and date 'T.S.S. Diomed / Otaru. / June 21st.', with the writer's first name 'Bill' typed at foot. His companions are named as Wright and Durrant (3rd engineer and extra 3rd mate), and Oliver.

There are a further 13 pages of images (60 photographs) comprising: 10 pages (49 photos) mainly related to the Far East (a few portraits of Westerners); one page with a single hand-coloured photograph of the Suez Canal defence memorial; and two pages of approx. 10 photographs related to England.
