Photograph Notes: Work first began on Carlisle Castle in 1122 on the orders of Henry I of England. Control of the castle soon passed to David I of Scotland who completed the construction of the keep and the city walls. David I died within the castle walls in 1153, and four years later, control of the castle and the surrounding area finally passed to England. However, this did not dissuade the Scots, who periodically attacked and besieged the castle during the medieval period. Carlisle once again saw fighting during the War of the Three Kingdoms in the 1640s, and finally witnessed its last siege during the Jacobite Uprising of 1745-46.
