Photograph Notes: Construction began in the late 14th century by John de Crichton and the castle was added to by subsequent generations over the next two hundred years. The information board in view shows a sketch of the courtyard as it might have appeared in the 1590s. Mary Queen of Scots visited in 1562 for the wedding celebrations of Lady Janet Hepburn and her half-brother Lord James Stuart. The striking faade of flattened pyramid decoration was built in 1585 by Francis Stuart, who brought back the design from his travels in Spain and southern Europe. It is thought to be the only example of its kind in the UK. The castle is now a property of Historic Scotland and is open to visitors from April to September.
