Antique Chinese

Carved

Folding Screen

Room Divider

We offer an antique four panel folding screen from China dating to the early twentieth century. Each panel features a pierced carved wooden panel at the top and bottom with carved upright side supports. The upper panels have left and right facing birds amongst flowers and foliage. The lower panels feature foliage. The reverse on the panels are lightly inscribed with the same designs.

As seen in the photographs, remnants of old silk embroidery hang from the panels waiting to be replaced. Some of the wood grid backing the fabric are missing. There also are remaining traces of aged Chinese newspaper which lined the back of the screen.

Each panel measures 25 3/8” in width and 74 3/8” in height with a depth of 1”. When folded the panels have a depth of 4”. If the panels are unfolded flat against a wall, the total width measures 101 1/2”. The space for the fabric panels measures 20 1/8" in width and 50 3/8" in height.
