Christophorus (Christophre/Christophe) Butkens (Antwerp, 1590-1650, the Hague) was a Cistercian abbot of the Sint-Salvator congregation in Antwerp. He is mainly remembered as historian an genealogist, who created his own system of hatching, causing confusion with the already extant systems. Illustrated by: The only signed engraving in the book is the frontispiece, by Harrewijn after Diepenbeke.

Subject: The Hague: Christiaan van Lom. Folio: [x], 672, 235, [xxv] pp. Full leather. Contemporary full calf with 6 raised bands, gilt decoration and a title ticket to the spine. Gilt board edges. Volume 1 only.
Condition: Good, given age. The frontispiece and map detached but present. Of the four sheets preliminaries, only the final page of the Epitre is present. Front and rear hinges starting but firmly attached. The lower corner of the front board a little worn, some scratches on the boards and edges. The spine damaged.

Medium: An engraved frontispiece portrait, an engraved folding map of the region and numerous engraved text illutrations (including a number of full-page illustrations of sepulchres, one of the heraldic hatching system used).
