SUPERB ANTIQUE CHINESE STONEWARE TRUNCATED MEIPING VASE
Northern Song / Yuan Dynasty (1100-1368), Museum Quality
Magnificent Chinese Chizou ware vase of rare form and superb decoration. The body covered in white slip glaze, then beautifully hand decorated in iron oxide depicting three highly stylized flying phoenix birds, the symbol of rebirth. The body is encircled with two double-line borders, while a clear overglaze envelops the entirety and drips down one side adding unique interest and depth. Absolutely stunning, yet quiet and tasteful presence. The epitome of the Chinese naturalist aesthetic of the period, which collectors seek and treasure to this day.
Similarly glazed vases are found on the market occasionally, however are becoming quite hard to come by, as Chinese collectors and museums have purchased most of the available pieces. We note two in our research that have sold in the past four years at Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses. The vase offered herein is most tactilely pleasing with a sublime surface patina. In excellent antique condition bearing age related darkening to the unglazed, slightly flared foot. Quite solidly potted with well thrown walls. This exquisite vase measures approximately 5 inches tall and 4.25 inches wide at the shoulder. Beautiful from every angle with an elegant contour that harmoniously sets off the decoration.
