Photograph Notes: Ulverston Station is a Grade II listed building. Although platform three is designated the 'up' (London bound) platform, the railway gradient here is falling at 1 in 76 in the direction of travel and it is unusual to find a railway station with such a significant gradient through the platforms. The gradient can best be gauged from the platform canopy supports on platform 1; the canopy is level and the columns are noticeably taller at the eastern end. The platform 2 and 3 canopy was originally the same length as that on platform 1 but it was shortened to reduce maintenance costs. The unusual island platform layout of the station was designed to make it easier for passengers to change trains for the Lakeside Branch. Platform 2 is no longer used. The Furness Railway monogram is visible cast into the top of the decorated canopy support brackets. The subway from platform 1 to platforms 2 and 3 floods in wet weather causing problems for passengers who have to be escorted by railway staff across a barrow crossing near the west end of the platforms. Ulverston Station is the starting point for many walkers embarking on The Cumbria Way long distance footpath (next photograph [[6754433]]).
