ITEM DESCRIPTION

Today we are pleased to offer this nicely preserved antique volume of travel and exploration across Tibet!

A great find from a local Massachusetts estate!

This antique volume is over 129 years old!

"Starting from the frontiers of Siberia, and coming out at the other end of Asia, on the coast of the new French colony of Tonquin, M. Bonvalot and his companions traversed not only that portion of Thibet which several English travelers, such as Dalgleish and Carey, and the great Russian Prjevalsky, had explored, but going beyond the limits which their predecessors had reached, forced their way over the table-lands and came out on the other side, this journey being one which no European had ever accomplished."

Very well preserved for its age!  Ex-library volume.  Publisher's pictorial grey cloth shows normal wear for age, including rubbing and soiling to the boards and spine, general wear around the extremities, bumping to the corners and some light soiling and spotting to the gilt top edge.  Library catalog numbers in gilt visible on spine; gilt lettering to the spine still reads nicely from the shelf despite some rubbing, gilt decorated front board displays beautifully.

Internally this volume is in nice shape overall.  Both boards remain firmly attached to the binding and all page groupings are secure.  Library bookplates affixed to front and rear pastedown endpapers; front pocket contains original folding map in great condition (library catalog numbers in pencil to back).  Library stamp to title page and catalog numbers written in pencil on the reverse.  Otherwise no inscriptions, bookplates or additional markings to note.

The text block itself is nicely preserved throughout.  Pages show some toning from age but are otherwise clean and free from rips, tears, writing and markings.  Perfectly readable throughout!  Beautifully illustrated with full page engravings and engravings in the text.

Includes the large folding map; map shows some splitting at one of the creases as pictured, but is otherwise quite well preserved.
