Photograph Notes: This statue of Alan Turing, by Glyn Hughes, was unveiled in 2001 to commemorate the 89th anniversary of his birth. He is holding an apple which represents "Newton, the tree of knowledge and forbidden love". His homosexuality resulted in his being shabbily treated which may have caused him to commit suicide. The Turing machine is considered the basis for the modern theory of computation, and by decoding the German Enigma machine's messages, his "Bombe" is credited with helping the Allies to win the Second World War.
