A DVT is a blood clot that forms in the veins deep in your leg, usually in the calf or thigh, but can sometimes occur in other veins in your body. The blood clot blocks the flow of blood in the affected vein, either partially or completely.
Sometimes part of the clot can break off and travels through the body until it eventually lodges within the lung – this is known as a PE. This is a serious condition which requires immediate treatment.
What are the causes and symptoms of DVT?
Certain people are more likely to develop DVT than others. Risk factors include:
1. Age – Older people are more likely to have a DVT than younger people.
2. Immobility – Caused by long travel journeys, particularly air travel, illnesses or injuries.
3. Having a recent operation, pregnancy, pre-existing medical illnesses, previous experience of DVT, taking hormone-based treatment, such as the contraceptive pill and HR therapy.
4. Obesity.
You can help to prevent a DVT by keeping mobile. If you are going on a long journey, such as coach, train or car, or sitting for any lengthy period, keep hydrated, try to take regular breaks to stretch your legs and feet – to help your circulation. And wear a pair of Graduated Compression Socks.
