HISTORY

"Sarah Lewis was a writer on the status of women [about whom little is known]. Woman's Mission, published anonymously in 1839 and later attributed to her, is her only work. this influential treatise. aimed at middle-class women within the home whose role [she] wishes to elevate but not extend in any public or political way.  She also suggests that female moral influence will have its effect on the wider world, and will ultimately improve social and political attitudes. The reassuringly moderate ideology was well received by reviewers for journals usually on opposite sides of the debates on the question of women. The very moderation of Lewis's position with regard to political rights for women seems to have helped the dissemination of her ideas, which stimulated debate, and explained how far the position of women could be improved without a more radical programme."

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Today we are pleased to offer this nicely preserved volume by Sarah Lewis!

A great find from a local New England estate!

This antique volume is over 183 years old!

A scarce volume to find in any condition!  From the English edition, this is the first US edition published in Boston, published essentially at the same time as the New York edition.  See the publishers note opposite the contents page.

Original publisher hardcover cloth binding is in nice shape overall!   Wear includes rubbing and soiling to the boards and spine, some general wear around the extremities including light bumping to the corners and spine extremes, and some soiling and spotting to the page edges.  Otherwise this is a tight, well-preserved antique volume!  The gilt title lettering on the spine displays nicely from the shelf.

Internally, this volume is in good shape, with both boards attached to the binding and all page groupings secure.  This is an ex-library volume with bookplates and library markings visible to the front and rear endpapers and fly pages, as well as the tile page and copyright page.

The text block of this volume is clean overall. There is just typical age-related toning to the pages, as well as light soiling and foxing scattered throughoutbut otherwise this volume is clean and free from rips, tears, writing and markings.  Perfectly readable throughout!

Make sure to see the additional photos in the description below for a thorough look through this volume.
