Description:

Japanese colour copper plate engraving showing a detailed map of Osaka in Meiji period. Five inset maps show Sakai, Nara, Nishikyō-ku of Kyoto, Kobe and Hyōgo. Original paper covered card covers marked and stained presented in a modern Japanese case with toggles. The map is in very good condition. Text in Japanese. 48 x 71.8cm, folded to 16.2 x 10.2cm.

Detailed map of Osaka and surrounding areas, with inset maps of Kobe, Sakai, Nara, and Kyoto [Nishi-Kyo ku] and Hyogo. The map shows streets with individual numbered blocks as well as features such as canals, temples, railway stations, harbours and the Osaka mint. There are also insets showing the departure times of trains between Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto and Ozu, and the locations of major municipal facilities: among them public schools, hospitals and the tax office. The map is edited by Shimai Masanosuke, who is described as "an Osaka commoner" (Osaka Fu heimin).
