A collection of five [x 5] original hand-coloured plates of gardens from Gabriel Thouin's Plans raisonnés de toutes les espèces de jardins.

Five original hand-coloured lithographic engravings on laid paper stock. All extracted from Thouin's famous work on gardens, Plans raisonnés de toutes les espèces de jardins. Contemporary plates numbing in ink. Engraver and artist details, 'Thouin. Del. / Litho. de C. Motte, printed along lower edge, togther with title of plate. Size - each approx. 40cm x 27.5cm, or a little larger.

Very Good condition. Very small closed tear to edge of plate 21, and the same plate quite tightly cropped along bottom edge. A couple of edges slightly unevenly trimmed. Light creasing. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.

These original hand-coloured plates of French garden designs are crying out to be framed and hung in a prominent place, such is their attractivness. The plates are numbered 4, 21, 34, 38, 44, and titled Jardin d'agrement; Vues du jardin parcs ou carrieres; Jardin champetre; Jardin d'agrement; and, Jardin fantastique.

⁂ Gabriel Thouin was the son of Jean-André Thouin, who had been a gardener in the service of the king of France. Following in his father’s footsteps, Gabriel became a gardener as well. Throughout his career, he documented the most famous private and public gardens in France, which he eventually published in the two-volume study Plans raisonnés de toutes les espèces de jardins.
