Illustrated with 8 engravings, facsimile letter, and map. Volume II is missing the frontispiece engraving, front end sheets, and title page. Interior contents mostly clean with light occasional foxing to the engravings. Defective.

Stephens Mitchell's signatures located on the new front end sheets both volumes. His bookplates are located on both front paste downs. Stephens Mitchell was the son of Eugene Muse Mitchell and Isabel "Maybelle" (Stephens) Mitchell. He was born 1896 in Atlanta. His sister was Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. Stephens Mitchell attended the University of Georgia and was a prominent Atlanta attorney, historian, and devout Catholic. He also edited the Atlanta Historical Bulletin. After John Marsh (husband of Margaret) died in 1952 Stephens Mitchell became the executor of Margaret Mitchell (Marsh) estate. Stephens Mitchell died in 1983 and the estate was passed on to his two sons Eugene Muse Mitchell II and Joseph Mitchell.
