Photograph Notes: They are starting to form on the plants - later on when they mature, they turn a blackish purple colour when they are ready to eat. The commercial version (blueberry) can be purchased in supermarkets and they are generally expensive. When you eat them your tongue, lips and fingers can get stained. One of the first things that I used to do when I went to my grandfather's farm was to go up the lane that took you to the bog in the mountain and look for them. Sometimes Presbyterians were called "Black-mouths", a throw-back from the term was used to describe the Scottish Covenanters who had to hide from the English soldiers out on the moors and ate blaeberries (blae being the Scots word for 'blue') to stay alive.
