In the middle of the war, the Allied bomber streams increasingly focused on the bombing of important key industries in the German Reich. Since the defense was only provided by the tried and tested Bf 109 and Fw 190 models, which were mostly stationed far away from the industrial sites and also had to confront the enemy machines that were appearing more and more frequently, many a manufacturing company took the scepter in hand and designed without further ado own samples, which should be stationed directly at the location: the object protection fighter was born.
The well-known rocket builder Wernher von Braun also participated in this development with two models. He offered a VTOL aircraft that had a short, cigar-shaped fuselage and was rocket-propelled. The interceptor I was to be stored vertically in a warehouse specially designed for this machine on a launching frame that ran on a double rail frame. If necessary, each fighter was driven out of the hall individually and each machine could be assigned individual targets via the ground radar. The fuel used was alcohol and liquid oxygen. The take-off was fully automatic, and the pilot was supposed to switch to cruising via an auxiliary combustion chamber. Two machine guns each in the wing roots should serve as armament. After the attack, the aircraft landed in gliding flight and touched down using a built-in landing skid. Since the individual fuel parts were difficult to manufacture at the time, the RLM rejected the Interceptor I.
