Ruby Saltbush
(Enchylaena tomentosa)
Ruby Saltbush grows as a small perennial shrub, up to a
meter in diameter. A low growing prostrate shrub almost like a groundcover.
Fruits form as sweet fleshy berries changing from bright
green/yellow to bright red/orange.
Highly drought tolerant and has historically been sought after by Indigenous Australians,
early settlers and livestock.
Useful as a tub specimen, shrub or coastal planting.
An excellent bush tucker plant which grows best in full
sunlight, partial shade and well-drained soil.
Bush tucker
The ripened fruit of E. tomentosa may be picked and eaten raw and is sweet in flavour,
being picked by desert Indigenous Australians as a snack
and is still frequently collected today.
Indigenous groups have been recorded to soak the ripe red fruits in water to make a
sweetened tea.
The leaves may be eaten as a vegetable after being boiled. Beautiful grey/green foliage
and outstanding sweet berries.
