An original oil painting by listed Southampton artist John Ferry (1849-1932). . This is one of three works by this artist that I am listing for sale including another of the same scene with figures added - see my ebay shop.

This is a landscape, a wooded meadow viewed the arched branches of a large tree, a stile beneath and a gateway opposite.  The sort of view you might have when walking through woodland.

Signed and dated lower right 'J. Ferry 1926'.  Inscribed verso 'Bassett Green, South ?' (I cannot read the last word which is quite faint). Also a label from a Southampton framers.
Bassett Green was a small village near Southampton which has now been much developed and become a suburb of the City.

Painted in oils on a wooden panel and in very good original condition.  Presented in a painted wood frame with inner gilt mount. The frame is in very good condition, a couple of places on the gilt where the red undercoat is showing through but this does not distract.

Measures 27.5 x 34.5cm including the frame, the painting only is 16.5 x 23cm.

Postage £5 in the UK, £16 to mainland Europe and £30 to the USA. All other destinations with the ebay global shipping programme.

John Ferry was born in St Mary, Southampton and attended Southampton School of Art where he won a number of prizes for his work.  He then became a teacher at the School of Art and also worked as a carver and gilder.  He was a member of Southampton Art Society and exhibited with them regularly, mostly scenes around Southampton and the New Forest, between around 1890 and 1930. A small number of his paintings are held in the collection of Southampton City Art Gallery.
