This is the US Army Model 1881 holster as arsenal modified in the 1890’s to fit the shortened Colt revolver with 5 1/2 inch barrel. It was also fitted with a 4 inch belt loop to fit over Mills cartridge belts.

Like all US Army leather holsters, this one is a tight fit when new. Over time the leather will form to the shape of the revolver for a looser fit. You can speed up the process by wet forming the holster.
