Notre Dame de Liesse

Our Lady of Joy & Jubilation

Single Decade Rosary

This ery pretty single decade rosary has a vintage medal that is silver-toned, about 5/8" in diameter, with Notre Dame de Lisse on the front and a scene on the back that illustrates the legend of the famous statue of Notre Deme de Liesse. The medal is very old and shows a bit of wear. The 1-1/8" silver-toned crucifix was made in Italy; the chaplet itself was designed and handmade in the USA by me.

All eleven beads are 8 mm, faceted, genuine Austrian Crystal.  The ten Hail Mary beads are alternating clear crystal and pale lavender colors. The Our Father is a pretty blue.

Chaplet is about 9-1/4" long and comes gift boxed and with the following:

  • Carry Pouch
  • How to Pray the Rosary pamphlet
  • How to Pray the Divine Mercy
  • The 15 Promises of Mary card
  • Notre Dame de Liesse prayer card

Devotion to Notre Dame de Liesse (Our Lady  of Joy and Jubilation)

The statue is said to have been brought to Liesse by three Knights Hospitaller who were brothers.  Sometime in the twelfth century, while protecting the fortress of Bersabee, near Ascalon, they were captured in a Saracene ambush and taken to the Sultan of Egypt. The knights refused to convert to Islam, despite theological arguments and promises of gold and honor. Angels brought the three imprisoned knights a small statue of Our Lady for consolation. The Sultan decided to send his daughter Ismeria to the dungeon to convert the three knights. But the knights preferred to talk about what unites people of different religions. She learns about the Christian god and is prompted to assist in the brothers' escape. During their flight all four fell asleep, and during their sleep were miraculously transported to Northern France. Awakening close to the Eppes* castle in Picardy, their joy and that of their family is immense. Ismeria received baptism in the cathedral of Laon. The knights preserved the statue of the Madonna, and built a handsome church to receive Our Lady of Liesse

The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
