Haunting Portrait Famed USSR LT. W.P. McCarthy Freemason 80 Yr Old Painting

I bought this interesting, expressive, intriguing painting at least 13 years ago. I loved the subject's strong features, haunting expressive eyes, and that he has what looks like a Freemason compass & square gold ring on his finger. He is also holding a letter and envelope in his hand, maybe from a loved one.

I also loved that the subject was wearing his army uniform and the painting had an eagle insignia in it. And that the painting was dated 1944 which made it a very old painting and done during War World ll.

I especially loved that it was obviously a portrait that was painted with him standing in front of the painter, in real time, and not from a photo due to the realistic expression captured on his face and him holding something as random as his mail, and the way he is holding it. Even the detail showing a white undershirt beneath his navy uniform.

It also features a great portrait of the American Eagle Army insignia to the top right hand side and then some unusual symbols below it in black.(see pics #1, 2, 3, 6,7,8, 22)

It captures a moment in time of this famed Lt. of the USNR who was part of the "Mighty Midgets at war book" (see pics #16,17,18). And his own thoughts are published inside the book, "LCS (L) Landing Craft Support (Large). 'We were the Mighty Midgets....The small ships that cast big shadows,' " on page 116 and his name is on a few other pages throughout the book.(see pics #19, 20, 21). This book, the 2nd one, will be included with the sale of this painting to tie in the providence and specialness of this painting. The book is blue and yellow, is 12" X 9" with a glossy hard cover. If you would like both books, let me know, I will send both.

I took lots of photos to capture the extraordinary and intriguing energy of W.P. McCarthy.

His captivating smile and strong energy in this painting lives on and he takes you back to this day in 1944, as if he were still alive; a day when he was happy, vibrant, and with lots of life.

W.P. McCarthy Self Portrait Painting:

H- approx. 19"

L- ~14"

W- canvas ~ 3/4" wide

A medium sized, canvas oil painting on wood, but not framed (see pic#13, 14, 15). The painting colors are red for the background, and then beige, brown, skin colors etc. for the rest of the painting.

Signed with the name of who it is, not of the painter, it says "W.P. McCarthy Lt. (jg?) USNR 44' " - I can't clearly make out what is within the brackets (see pics #9, 10, 11).

In fair antique condition; with some paint loss, cracking, scuffs, scratches, and the canvas has 2 small tears to upper right side just below the eagle (see pics #6, 7, 8). And pic #12, a darker spot on his uniform, not sure if that darker brown spot is supposed to be there or not. But none of this is terribly noticeable because of the brilliant bright red backdrop. The painting displays very well and is still vibrant for its age.

A great conversational piece because the subject is very interesting and intriguing and his personality still comes through strongly after all these years.

See all photos for full condition of painting.
