St Kilda Lace Up Football
Jumper - 1986-87 VFL ERA Football with HUGALL HOILE Club sponsor patch

This is only and last XL Saints lace up. NO MORE WILL BE MADE.
The lace ups were a C0VID lockdown project - there are a few odd sizes in lace ups from the traditional clubs left on here
There is also one last size: Small Valentines Greetings laceup listed on here separately.

Dropped the price from $210 to $170 to move this and the last of the Tiges, Norf, Pies & Dons laceups.

The ol Finger Breakers
Footy's Forgotten Fashion....lace up throwbacks.

At Linton Street, Trevor Barker, Spud Frawley, Joffa Cunningham, Peter Kiel, WoW Jones, Gary Odgers, Robert Elphinstone and others wore laceups in the late 70’s - until the mid '80s.
This lace up is like medallion entry to the Saints Disco and a front row seat to the Friday night ground 'watering'.

The VFL Banned The Lace Up!
In 1987 Robert Flower dislocated his finger in a lace up jumper and the league banned the greatest footy jumper of them all.
Funnily enough, laceups were still worn in the SANFL until 2001.

70’s & 80’s VFL Footy
Footy was played in the mud, on Saturday arvos at suburban grounds.

Centremen kicked it long to the big full forwards one out and we held a tranny to our ears to hear the round-the-grounds from Skeeter Coghlan at Moorabbin, Vic Park, Arden Street and Windy Hill.
If you kicked a sausage roll you stayed on the ground to kick another and ruckmen rested in the pocket.
Rovers, back pockets, wingmen. Mythical boom recruits that came from the bush, the West and crow eaters arrived after carving up the Big V in State-of-Origin.. paid in brown paper bags of cash.

Blokes took hangers, got their kick and never ever handball backwards at risk of being dragged. And 30 possessions meant you'd dominated.

We crammed around little tellies and watched the highlights on The Winners with Drew and the wash-up on World of Sport on Sunday.

You were even allowed to scream your head off at the match without being turfed. Real footy, those were the days my friend.

Backstory:
I've always wanted a 1980 Tetley Tigers lace up to wear to the footy, couldn't find one so in 2018 - basking in the sun of breaking our premiership drought - I set about making one.
As Ronald Dale said 'If it is to be, it's up to me!'
getting an original lace up jumper to use as a pattern from an op shop in country SA. After a few not-quite-right early samples, I got it right and started wearing it to The London Tavern and marching to the G... to knowing nods from the blokes that remembered them.
During Covid lockdown, holed up on the couch, I researched the other clubs who sported lace ups back in the day and thought if city hall & the clubs won't make them because 'they're too niche' I'm make a couple of batches.
This will likely be the last batch I do, so if you want one, this is your moment.

*** the lace up in the first picture is an XL ***

SIZE: XL

Materials
Outer: heavy duty cotton drill
Lining: 100% cotton flannelette (ivory cream colour)
Eyelets: brass with a vintage black coating (won’t rust).
VFL & Sponsor Patches: have been replicated to exact original specs and are sewn on, not printed (enlarge the pics for detail).

The lace up is the classy, cotton grandparent of today's awful printed, sublimated shiny jumpers!

This is not an original jumper, NOT player issue and NOT match worn.
If this lace up was match worn, you'd be adding a zero to the total...as a starting bid!
It's a replica, a reproduction.... and a very good one.
Made with a hat tip to baseball's EBBETS FIELD FLANNELS fabulous vintage jerseys.

Premiership Football Jackets... a brief history
Your jumper is designed to the patterns and standards of the great Vic Hill, the modern grandfather and the man responsible for reprising the lace up in Adelaide in the late 1960s.
Laceups were brought into the VFL by SANFL recruits who bought their lace up jumpers across the border in the early 70s.
Saints, Tiges, Norf, Catters, Dons, Roys, Pies and the Bloods were the clubs to wear Vic Hill"s .. big Ross- before he became 'the medal'-Glendinning even introduced them to the inaugural '87 Weagles when he left North and headed back West.
