This is a vintage Vernon Kilns Frontier Days ceramic cup and saucer set. The set is decorated with the famous rifle around the rims, with scenes of Native Americans and cowboys hunting buffalo. Vernon Kilns produced the Winchester '73 pattern in 1950 to coincide with the release of Universal International's picture of the same name. It was produced until 1953 when the name was changed to Frontier Days, which was produced until 1954.
I have two different hallmarks available (see photos #4 and #5). Quantities of 6 total of the crossed rifles (“Winchester 73”), and 5 of the Calistoga Wagon (“Frontier Days”). Both hallmarks say “Hand Painted Under Glaze” and “Vernon Kilns – California U.S.A.” The patterns are identical. Please specify in your order if you have a particular preference in backstamp (subject to prior sale). In the absence of instruction, I will fill orders first from the Winchester 73 hallmarks until all sold.
Note I have one additional cup and saucer set (Winchester 73 hallmarks) available under eBay item #235253119304. This set has a slight discoloration, and, consequently, a discounted price.
This pattern is hand-painted in what is known as "clobbed" transferware -- which means the colors were hand-painted on top of the brown transferred printed design.
Note: you are purchasing ONE cup & saucer set unless you change the quantity to more than one (subject to prior sale). Combined shipping always applies for multiple purchases. If you purchase more than one set, please wait for me to invoice you on additional items so that you are charged the correct actual postage. In the event you pay excess shipping, overage will be refunded immediately to you.
Dimensions:
Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views.
I gladly accept returns, but please note I do
not pay return postage unless there was a significant error in my
description. The item listed is being
sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. All
dimensions and weights approximate. If you have a question or an assumption on
an item prior to purchase, please ask. I much prefer to take the time on
the front end to make sure you will be satisfied with your purchase.
Remember, when buying vintage expect
imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of
others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an
antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting
from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude
surprises upon receipt.
