NORWAY - large and impressive vintage album containing 83 albumen photographs, circa 1890.
A total of approx. 83 original albumen photographs, many with captions and photographer's numbering/details in the negative. Numerous photographs by John Valentine ['J.V.'], as well as famous Norwegian studios of the era, such as Knudsen, Lindahl. Mounted back to back on thick card leaves. Half maroon leather over cloth binding, all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Size: album - approx. 44cm x 33cm / photographs - various sizes, including 5 mammoth plate (approx. 37cm x 28cm); 46 large plate (approx. 27cm x 21cm, or slightly smaller or larger); and, 32 medium plate (approx. 21cm x 15cm, or slightly smaller of larger). A heavy item, approx. 7kg with packaging, hence a higher than normal shipping charge.
Condition: photographs in good overall condition. A smallish proportion rather faded and age-toned. The rest with good tones on the whole, with lighter scattered age-toning/fading here and there as you would expect in an album of this age. Likewise, edges of mounts with varying degrees of spotting / foxing, and leaves themselves with a slight waviness as is often encountered due to the weight of such albums. Covers quite worn and with some marking and scuffing, and some wear to edges and corners. A couple of leaves left blank at rear. Contents complete and no leaves have been removed, though one leaf has separated from the block and is laid loosely inside.
This large and heavy album contains numerous albumen photographic prints by John Valentine, as well as local Norwegian photographers such as Knudsen and Lindahl. Amongst the highlights are numerous townscapes, as well a group of five mammoth plate landscapes, measuring approx. 37cm x 28cm, including two of glaciers, one in fabulous close-up.
