This books was published and used in a time when the Netherlands was in economic and moral decline. The author hoped to instill patriotic duty and accomplish a re-orientation of society's moral stance. To that end, the alphabet is illustrated with more or less ideologically chosen keyword, that was accompanied by an illustration, a two-line poem and a prose piece. This way, the glory of the Enlightenment was communicated to the young mind, page after page. As opposed to the earlier Haneboek (another educational work), the Vaderlandsch A-B boek was mostly devoid of Biblical matter. Alhtough the texts themselves might seem crudely political to the modern eye, one must bear in mind that this trend-setting schoolbook tried to break through odl values. For a thorough essay on Dutch A.B.C. books see Ter Linden, De Vries & Welsink: "A is een Aapje" (Amsterdam, 1995).

Biographies: Jan Hendrik Swildens (Voerendaal 1745 - Amsterdam 1809) was a Dutch professor of law in Franeker. He was also a philosopher of the Enlightenment, who had a special interest in educational problems. His ideas on education are in part assimilated into the 1806 Education Act.
