ART = Arthur Pepper Jewelry by ModeArt Jewelry Creations, Inc. ~ Arthur Pepper founded his jewelry company ART and/or Mode-Art in New York City in the late 1940's. The exact date the company closed isn't clear. It is known that ART produced their last pieces in the early 1970's. The company’s heyday was in the 1950’s-60’s, the “golden” age of costume jewelry. ART competed directly with such companies as Hollycraft and Florenza in terms of style and high quality. Nicely, the founders of ART & Florenza counted one another as friends, according to author Pamela Wiggins, as related by Larry Kassoff, the son of Florenza's founder, Daniel Kassoff.
Arthur Pepper produced jewelry in many different styles, including Renaissance Revival, Victorian Revival and Art-Deco. His designs were prolific and wide ranging in terms of style and era, but they are all of very high quality. In the manufacture of ART jewelry, only the best crystals, imitation pearls and enamels were approved by Mr. Pepper. Antique gold metal and unusual color combinations are characteristic features of ART. Some of his themes included flowers, florals and fruit, leafy motifs and figures of animals, birds and reptiles. Especially popular was, and still are, their Christmas collections, as well as heraldic brooches, pendants, bracelets and Maltese Crosses. Some of the favorite designs of ART collectors are the brightly colored enamel and figural pieces.
ART designs were produced only in small quantities and only sold through major retailers and major US department stores. ART did not have any advertising campaigns during its entire existence! Today, ART jewelry is very collectible and every year it becomes more difficult to find. Original owners cherished these treasures, which helps explain the excellent preservation of most ART jewelry today.
Hallmark: Their jewelry is marked ART©, ArtMode, or less often, ModeArt.
The ART© copyright mark has been used since 1955, when the copyright was registered with the US Chamber of Commerce.
