Rare Antique Botanical Print-DICHAPETALUM PEDUNCULATUM-Turpin-Perrot-1816

Description: This rare and delicate plate originates from: 'Dictionaire des sciences naturelles ... classee d'apres la methode naturelle de M. Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu.', by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin, published in Paris and Strasbourg by F.G. Levrault, 1816-1829. Later it was published in Italian by Batelli in 1837. (Translation: Dictionary of natural sciences ... according to the natural method of M. Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu.) This very scarse work consistsof 72 volumes, including 12 plate volumes with 1200 plates. Plates after Turpin and Pretre. Artists and Engravers: Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) is considered by many as the greatest French botanical painter of his time. His drawings of botanical details have rarely been surpassed. With Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1776 � 1854) he collaborated in some of the most important botanical publications in the early 19th. century. Turpin voyaged extensively in the Carribean and Southern United States. As curator of his Dictionary Turpin had some of the finest engravers work on his plates, which include etchings / engravings and stipple engravings. This plate is engraved by Perrot.

Subject: Plate: 'Chailletie pedonculee. - Chailletia pedunculata.' (Dichapetalum pedunculatum.)

Condition: Excellent given age. General age related toning. Left margin a bit irregular from binding. Please study scan carefully.

Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 12.5 x 20.5 cm. The image size is ca. 9 x 18 cm.
Size (in inch): The overall size is ca. 4.9 x 8.1 inch. The image size is ca. 3.5 x 7.1 inch.

Medium: Copperplate stipple engraving, intaglio print. Original hand colouring and in-plate colouring (a-la-poupee).
