Minolta MC Rokkor-PF 58mm f/1.4 Prime Lens

Lens works 100%.

Excellent Glass, Mechanics. Excellent Appearance

This MC Rokkor-PF 58mm f1.4 is a vintage lens from late 1960's. Although 1/2 stop slower, it shares straits (Bokeh, color) with its famed big brother Rokkor-PG 58mm f1.2.  These old Rokkor lenses have their unique characters and colors, which many photographers like, perhaps because Minolta was the only major camera/lens manufacturer who made their own glass. Nikon/Canon etc they just bought glass from glass manufacturers like Hoya.

The lens is in Minolta MC or SR mount which fits Minolta manual focus film cameras by itself. But it can be adapted to various 4/3, Sony NEX or Fuji FX mirrorless digital cameras. No adapter is included in the sale. You must buy your own.

Those Rokkor lenses are now over 50 years old and generally require service to restore their performance. The main culprit is the grease in the lens. After decades of use (or disuse) it usually has separated and the lighter oil part has evaporated and condensed onto the internal glass surfaces to form a film of numerous tiny oil droplets (oil haze) - very detrimental to image quality as it softens the image quite a lot. The oil haze is much worse than a little swirls of cleaning mark on the coating or a few sporadic dust particles inside the lens. See the photo of such oil haze inside a typical copy of this lens lens before it is serviced.

Some of the lenses, if they have experienced hot/cold conditions for example in a storage unit, the lighter oil may have got onto the blades to cause a sluggish or completely stuck aperture. Even if not yet on blades, often the oil has crept close to the aperture cartridge and not before long it will get onto the blades. The grease on the focus helicoids may have deteriorated (separated, lighter oil creeping everywhere, heavier part has gummed up) to cause a stiff focus ring or very loose focus action with some play. If the lens has been on beach or in dusty environment, the focus action may be gritty.

The lens here has just been serviced. We cleaned it inside out. Internal glass surfaces have been cleaned and oil in vicinity of the aperture cartridge as well as gummed up grease at various places has been cleaned off. The helicoids have been rebuilt with new modern grease applied. The lens will serve you many more years without you worrying about those issues mentioned above.

The lens glass is clear and bright, with no scratch, fungus or haze. If you shine strong light through the lens as usual you may see a little tiny dusts. This is normal and has no effects on lens performance.

Mechanically excellent. Aperture blades have no oil and are snappy. Aperture ring clicks positively at all click stops. The focus action is smooth and firm. Filter threads are good. Filter screws on/off without effort.

Cosmetically the lens is in excellent condition. The lens barrel shows a little very minor bright spots on the sharp edges. The lens looks very clean and nice, with all lettering crisp and bright. Please see photos for cosmetic condition.

Includes a pair of generic caps as shown.

A word of caution for buyers of these 1960's vintage lenses: Lens element making especially the coating technology was not as advanced back then over 50 years ago. In those 1960's vintage lenses you may find one or two tiny spots of coating defects. It was considered a pass at the time as it won't have any impact on lens performance. We will mention glass defects only if they are outside this norm (larger and/or near center). Also these lenses tend to have a little more dusts than typical lenses we cleaned, even after restoration and cleaning. It is the nature of the lenses of this age and has no impact on the lens performance. No restoration can make them better. If you are greatly concerned with possible tiny spots, you would better not to buy a lens of this vintage - try to get some lenses of 1980's or later, when coating and lens element making technology was significantly improved. Thank you.
