USAF Air Force Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service (ARRS) operated the HH-3E "Jolly Green" helicopters during the Vietnam War to conduct search and rescue missions for downed pilots and other personnel in Southeast Asia.

The HH-3E Jolly Green was a specialized version of the Sikorsky CH-3 transport helicopter that had been modified with extra armor, self-sealing fuel tanks, and other features to enable it to operate in combat zones. The helicopter was equipped with a rescue hoist and a winch, and it was crewed by highly trained Air Force pararescue jumpers who were responsible for performing the actual rescues.

The Jolly Green helicopters were instrumental in rescuing hundreds of downed pilots and other personnel during the Vietnam War. These missions were often extremely dangerous, with crews frequently facing heavy enemy fire and adverse weather conditions. Despite these challenges, the Jolly Green crews persevered and became renowned for their bravery and skill.
