This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It has the classic glaze found in Shino wares. 

Shino ware (志野焼, Shino-yaki) is Japanese pottery, usually stoneware, originally from Mino Province, in present-day Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It emerged in the 16th century, but the use of shino glaze is now widespread, both in Japan and abroad. It is identified by thick white glazes, red scorch marks, and a texture of small hole, Shino glaze was first developed in the Momoyama period (1568 – 1600). The main characteristic of Shino Glaze is of a satin-like white color with spotting, a result of carbon trapping in the firing process

Suitable more for the winter season, it is a large deep styled chawan used to keep the tea warm longer (see enlarged pictures).  This chawan measures 5 " in diameter and about 3 1/4" tall (12.5 x 8 cm). Having been in storage with limited use it remains in fine condition.
