Photograph Notes: The strange circular antenna of the aircraft radio beacon takes on a new appearance with a coating of rime deposited in the freezing easterly winds of late. The beacon is one of a global network of VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (or VOR) stations set up as a radio navigation system for aircraft. Its circular antenna allows an aircraft receiving the VOR signal to determine the heading to the VOR beacon; by combining two headings, the aircraft's position can be found.
