These port tubes relieve the pressure in the speaker box and make it easier for the woofers to move. The ports push air out when the woofers move back and suck air in when the woofers move forwards. The ports 'fire' sound out in whichever direction they face - so rear ports need a wall behind them to bounce the sound back to you.
