A fine and delightful early albumen photograph of the Hon[oura]ble Walter Alexander, about 10 years of age, on the back of his pony Fairy, from an Anglo-Irish album, c1859.

A superb photograph of the young Walter Alexander (1849-1934) - son of Anglo-Irish soldier and politician James du Pre Alexander, 3rd Earl of Caledon (1812-1855), dressed in suit and hat, seated on his pony Fairy, his tight hand holding a whip and his left hand on the reins, presumably taken at the family's estate in County Tyrone.

Walter Alexander became a lieutenant colonel in the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), and served in the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1900. He married Margaret Katherine Grimston (who died 12 September 1929), daughter of Rev. the Hon. Francis Grimston, who was the son of James Walter Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam
