Researching Gorthon ships is made difficult by most of the information about the companies being in Swedish. The company was set up by the Gorthon family in 1915, although there was already a ship named Alida Gorthon in 1902, and further ships of the same name date from 1946 (covered on this page), a bulk carrier completed in 1963 and another bulk carrier completed in 1977.

This Alida Gorthon, later Kvarner, was launched shortly after the end of WW2 in 1946 and remained in service until 1984 when she was stranded and had to be broken up after a service life of 36 years. She had two sister ships Ada Gorthon, later KRK, and Stig Gorthon, later Korana. All three were sold to the Yugoslavian state-owned company Jugoslavenska Slobodna Plovidba. Kvarner is a coastal resort in Croatia, KrK is a beautiful island off the Croatian coast and Korana is a river that flows through Croatia.
