1926 The Making of a Magazine "A tour through the vast organization of The New Yorker Magazine" by Corey Ford

[New York: The New Yorker, 1926]. First Edition. Sharp copy of this humorous volume commissioned by The New Yorker magazine and published the year after its founding, a tongue-in-cheek look at all phases of the magazine's production told in twenty installments, which were originally serialized in the magazine beginning August 8, 1925. The text is attributed to author and humorist Corey Ford (1902-1969, signed in type on the terminal leaf), who takes the reader on a tour through production, from securing ink and paper, typesetting, binding, and printing. Ford was responsible for naming Eustace Tilley, the monocled, top-hatted dandy who became a mascot of sorts for the magazine, and who appears with frequency throughout the "Making of a Magazine" series. Richly illustrated throughout, with chapter headings like "Life Among the Paperjacks" (II), "The Deep-Sea Squid Farm" (VI), "The Magazine's Punctuation Farm" (X), and "Operating the Pneumatic Tubes" (XIV). An exceedingly well-preserved copy of an elegant, fragile volume, and uncommon thus. OCLC notes just 10 holdings. Item #4875

Octavo (24cm); batik paper-covered boards and parchment spine, with pictorial title label mounted to front cover; publisher's original unprinted light brown paper dustjacket; [46]pp; illus. Short.
