I am pleased to offer for sale a collection of paintings by Peter R. Holmes, a very talented ornithological and animal artist working in the 60s and 70s. I have not been able to find biographical detail but this is not uncommon for artists working postwar when the meticulous recordkeeping of earlier years had ceased and the internet was yet to arrive. There are a number of auction records for his work and a small number appear to have been reproduced as prints.
This is a magnificent portrayal of a Peregrine Falcon perched in a spruce tree. Incredible detailing of the birds plumage and attentive eye, the texture of the tree bark and the foliage, this is a very fine work.
Signed lower right in full 'Peter R. Holmes'. Undated but will be late 60s/70s.
Painted in gouache on paper and in excellent original condition.
Presented with an ivory coloured paper mount within an antiqued silver gilt wood frame. The mount is a little rippled, the frame is in good vintage condition, small signs of age but nothing significant.
Glazed and ready to hang.
Measures 55 x 45cm including the frame.
