FABULOUS HAND PAINTED KO IMARI BOWL

Edo / Meiji Period, 1800s

Superb Japanese Antique Imari bowl of wonderful quality. Magnificent hand decoration in polychrome enamels depicting numerous wise sages, sennin, and scholars, all clad in vibrant kimonos. The central cartouche is further decorated in underglaze blue with a stylized shishi lion frolicking amongst blossoming peonies. Both the interior and exterior are covered in highly detailed paintings. Must have taken the artist a great deal of time to complete. Too much to list, see photos for all of the superb detail.

The hand painting is spectacular, and the lively and colorful imagery is further embellished in brilliant giltwork. Produced with impeccable taste and craftsmanship in the traditional Japanese aesthetic of the age of the Shogun and Samurai. All the elements are of meticulous rendering, melding to create an artistic piece that draws attention from all the way across the room.

This exquisite bowl measures approximately 7.25 inches across and 3 inches high. In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks, just minor wear commensurate with age. It must have taken many hours of concentrated hand craftsmanship to produce, then been carefully stored by the fortunate owners for approximately 150 years. A rare and truly magnificent porcelain bowl representing Japan's incomparable taste from a bygone era. A superlative centerpiece for the discriminating collector of fine Asian art and antiques.
