Early medieval coinage is rare. Early medieval coins made into coin pendants are more rare. This is a one-of-a-kind piece for a one-of-a-kind person.

This coin was minted with a front-facing crowned head of Edward I, with legend and beaded border surrounding, +EDW R AIIGL DIIS hYB.

On the reverse the long cross pattée divides tri-pellets in inner angles, with a legend and beaded border surrounding, CIVI TAS LON DON. 

Originally the coin weighed 1.35g. the reverse is boldly toned with fine and rare pellet details.

This is an all-original Silver Edward I of England, Edward Longshanks, 2a type Medieval Penny, London minted by hammer blow in the late winter or early spring of 1280. The coin is set in a rope-edged, sterling silver, bezel pendant set on a 16" Sterling Silver Rope Chain.

Pennies of this type, in uncirculated condition, have sold for thousands of dollars at Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses.

This rare Longshanks silver long cross Penny of King Edward the First presents Edward I as the King and Lord of Ireland of England.

In 1296, King Edward's armies invaded Scotland. This war with the Scots was fought continuously until 1328, at which time Scottish independence was proclaimed.

The passing of Scottish King, Alexander the Third, in 1286 caused a power vacuum in the Scottish Isles. At this time King Edward used his influence to try to expand his kingdom into Scotland. Edward declared himself Lord Paramount of Scotland.

King Edward improved the English silver of the era in both quality and appearance. His coins were renowned throughout the world.

Much of his silver had been looted by Vikings, and later recovered from Viking hordes over the years. More of these pennies are found in Norway and Sweden than in the Scottish and Irish Isles.
