Crochet (English pronunciation: French: is a process of creating fabric from yarn, thread, or other strands of material using a hook. The word comes from the French word "crochet", meaning hook. Mademoiselle Riego de la Blanchardiere is generally credited with inventing Irish Crochet, publishing the first pattern book in 1846. Irish lace became popular in Europe and America and was produced in quantity until World War I
