Fine 19th century hand lacquered Jubako representing the high elegance of the Japanese aesthetic during the age of the Shogun and Samurai. Featuring stunning hand applied golden maki-e lacquer detail. Ornate and magnificent design featuring an abundance of Japanese fans, each decorated with minute linework, some as thin as a single hair. Each fan is adorned with birds, tortoises, garden scenes, botanicals, and intricate designs. All rendered in sublime shades of golden lacquer in subtle relief.

The artisan who created this superb large jubako was a master craftsman who utilized many techniques including, maki-e (gold sprinkled), takamakie (raised design), and glittering nashiji (gold flakes sprinkled into the lacquer). Small silver studs are also placed at several points, an unusual detail. The interior of each of the five compartments is lacquered in contrasting vibrant vermilion red. Dating to the 1800s, and traditionally used to hold sweets and delicacies, today the jubako would be perfect as a storage box for a variety of treasures in the office, studio, or on a dresser top. Or, simply displayed as a rare and magnificent art piece on its own.

In handsome antique display condition, we do note occasional surface wear and a few age related dings, but nothing that takes away from the overall presence of the piece. Bears a sublime patina commensurate with age. A wonderful example of the artistry of a bygone era.

Of rare large size, measures approximately 15.5 inches tall, by 9.25 inches wide, by 8.75 inches deep. A skillfully crafted work of art, and an outstanding centerpiece for the collector of Japanese antiques.
