Sowing Seeds - Indoors March to May, Outdoors May to June
Sow indoors - March to early May for best results for an early crop. Sow in deep 9cm pots of damp seed compost - 2 seeds per pot 1.5cm deep (with the seed on edge) and a temperature of 15-20c. Keep moist, but not soaked. Seedlings will usually appear in 7-14 days. Gradually accustom the plants to outdoor temperature when plants are a good size and when all danger of frost has passed. Plant outdoors in a sunny position, spacing the plants 60-70cm apart.
Sow outdoors May to June and sow seeds where they are to crop, in a sunny position. Sow in 1.5cm deep holes - 2 seeds per hole with the seeds on edge, in finely prepared soil, space seeds 60-70cm apart, keep watered but not soaked. A cloche (or a large jam jar) can be placed over the planted seeds to speed up the germination! (The weaker of the pair of plants can be removed). Keep plants well watered and weed free.
