Sowing Seeds: Sow Indoors February to Early June or September to October
Sow Outdoors Direct April to June

Sow seeds indoors in a cell module tray or a seed tray filled with moist seed compost. Sow the seeds on the surface of the compost and cover with only a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep compost moist but not soaked. To germinate the seeds need a temperature of 15-20c. Seal seed tray/module in a plastic bag to speed up germination, but remove bag as soon as seeds germinate to prevent mould. Depending on when sown, Aquilegia seeds are often slow to germinate, sometimes taking 1-3 months for seedlings to appear. When plants are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into 9cm pots and grown on. When the weather is warmer plant outside, but first acclimatise the young plants to outdoor temperatures for a week or so. Plant out in a sunny or part shade position. Spacing is 45cm apart, plant in groups for more impact.
Sow seeds outdoors Sow directly into a prepared seed bed from April to June. Seeds may be quite slow to germinate. Water during dry spells.
Seeds are packed in manilla or gripseal packets and sent by 1st Class Post in a protective padded envelope, with growing instructions.
