Beetroot Cylindra is very special due to its cylindrical shape. The cylindrical shaped root is smooth skinned and the sweet flesh is a beautiful deep red. This is a useful beetroot to grow as it matures a bit later than round, globe beetroots. This very healthy vegetable is a worthwhile crop to grow in the garden, even the leaves can be eaten raw in salads or stir-fried lightly, like spinach. Sow under glass January to March or outside in April to July. Sow seeds little and often - every 2-3 weeks for a good supply. Harvest from June to October/November from an early sowing. Cooked beetroots are perfect in soups, salads, pickles, roasts, quiches, curries and sandwiches. Beetroots can be stored through the winter in boxes of sand, in a cool, frost free place, until required. Height 45cm.
Sowing Seeds: Indoors Sow January to March, Outdoors Sow April to July - In Cold Weather Protect with Cloches.
Sow indoors January to March in deep cell modules (deep plug trays) or 9cm pots - especially for very early sowing, so as not to disturb the roots. Sow 2cm deep using a good seed compost. Place in a greenhouse, growhouse or on a window sill - for best results for an early crop. Keep the compost moist, not soaked. Germination takes approx 7-14 days depending on the temperature. When plants are a good size, gradually accustom them to outdoor temperatures for a week or so, before planting outside. Protect young plants from frost as they are sensitive to the cold and may  go to seed early.
Sow outdoors April to July in a prepared seed bed, 2.5cm deep & 10cm apart, rows 30cm apart, in a sunny position. Germination takes 7-21 days. Thin out if necessary, to 10cm apart. Protect from frost with garden fleece. Thinnings can be used in baby leaf salads. Keep well watered - dry soil will lead to woody roots. Feed plants every 2 weeks. Sow more seeds every 2-3 weeks.
Beetroot can also be grown outdoors in large, deep containers, if you only have a patio garden. Enjoy your harvest of healthy, home grown Cylindra beetroots!
Seeds will be packed in manilla/grip seal packets and posted by 1st Class Post, in a protective padded envelope, with growing instructions.
